The Zero-Width Space, and Why It Breaks Your Hashtags
A zero-width space occupies a position and draws nothing. Inside a hashtag it makes the tag a different string, so the tag looks perfect and reaches nobody.
A zero-width space is a Unicode character that occupies a position in a string and draws nothing at all. It is legitimate — it tells a renderer where a long word may break — and it is also the single most common invisible passenger in a creator's caption.
What a zero-width space is for
It exists to solve a typesetting problem. A long unbroken string like a chemical name or a German compound needs somewhere to wrap, and a zero-width space marks a legal break without adding a visible gap. Used deliberately, it is doing real work.
Almost nothing in a social caption uses it deliberately. What puts one in your text is usually one of these:
- A caption tool that fakes blank lines with them rather than with a printable blank.
- A copy out of a web page whose author used one for line-break control.
- A "font generator" that decorates text and leaves padding behind.
- A paste chain through two or three apps, one of which added it.
Why a hashtag stops matching
This is the failure worth understanding, because it is invisible on both ends.
A hashtag is a string. The platform matches it against other strings. A tag with a zero-width space inside it is a different string from the tag without one, so it matches a tag nobody else has ever used — a feed of exactly one post, yours.
The caption looks right. The tag is styled as a link, because the platform still parses it as a hashtag. Tapping it opens a page with your post on it and nothing else. Nothing in that sequence tells you anything is wrong.

Checking a hashtag set
Once the invisible characters are out, the rest of the hashtag block is worth a pass too — duplicates in different casing, tags that are not valid hashtags at all, and the platform caps that discard the excess silently.

Zero-width characters that are not the space
Four characters behave similarly and are worth telling apart:

The joiner is the one that matters. Inside a multi-person emoji the joiners are what make it one picture rather than four; strip them and the family becomes a queue. Any cleaner that removes every invisible character without checking context will do exactly that.
Should you ever use one on purpose?
Two cases come up, and one of them is a bad idea.
For blank lines, use something else. People use a zero-width space to stop Instagram collapsing a paragraph break. It sometimes works, and sometimes the composer classes it as whitespace and strips it — putting you back where you started. A printable-but-blank character like the braille pattern blank survives the same pass reliably; the mechanism is in Instagram line breaks.
For breaking a long URL in display text, it is genuinely the right tool, and it is what it was designed for.
The Unicode Consortium publishes the properties that make all of this true. Everything else that travels with copied text is in invisible characters.
