How to Add Line Breaks to an Instagram Caption That Stick

Instagram line breaks collapse because the caption field strips trailing whitespace from every line before it saves, and then merges the empty lines that leaves behind. The fix is one character per blank line: something printable that draws nothing.
Why Instagram line breaks disappear
The break itself is never lost. A single newline survives every composer on every platform. What disappears is the empty line between paragraphs.
Here is the sequence, and it is completely deterministic:
- You write three paragraphs with a blank line between each.
- The composer strips trailing whitespace, so a line holding only spaces becomes a line
holding nothing at all.
- Runs of nothing get merged.
- The caption publishes as one block.
This is why the trick people pass around — "type a full stop on the empty line" — works. A full stop is not whitespace, so nothing strips it. It is also visible, which is the whole reason to use something better.
Instagram, TikTok and Threads all behave this way. Facebook, LinkedIn, X and YouTube descriptions do not.
The character that works
The best filler is printable but blank: a graphic character, so no whitespace pass touches it, that happens to draw nothing.

Where the breaks are worth spending
Instagram gives a caption 2,200 characters and shows roughly the first 125 before the "more" fold. Paragraph structure below that fold makes a long caption readable. Paragraph structure above it costs you: a blank line in the first two lines spends part of the only text most people will ever see.

When it still collapses
Three things to try, in order:
- Check you pasted rather than typed. Autocorrect on some keyboards eats the filler.
- Switch the character. Try the Hangul filler, then the zero-width space. Composers
change, and a character that survives on one build may not on the next.
- Check for other invisible passengers. If the caption has been through several apps
it may be carrying stray characters that are interfering. Run it through the invisible character remover first, then add the breaks. The whole cast of characters is in invisible characters.
