Hashtag Mistakes That Cost You the Whole Set

Most hashtag mistakes cost you one tag. Three of them cost you the entire set on that post, and none of the three raise an error — the caption publishes, the tags look like links, and nothing reaches anyone.

Going over YouTube's cap. YouTube ignores all hashtags on a video carrying more than sixty, rather than the excess, and separately warns that over-tagging "may result in the removal of your video from your uploads or from search". That second one is a removal, not a ranking penalty, and it bites well below sixty.

An invisible character inside a tag. A zero-width space, picked up from wherever you copied the block, makes the tag a different string. The platform still parses it as a hashtag and styles it as a link. Tapping it opens a feed containing exactly one post: yours. The mechanism is in the zero-width space.

A character no platform allows. An apostrophe, an emoji, an ampersand or a hyphen cuts the tag at that character. #don't becomes #don, silently, and you have tagged something you never meant to.

The validator checks a block against the cap for the platform you picked, names the tags that are not valid hashtags, and hands back the cleaned set in order.

Cheaper, and much more common.

Duplicates in different casing. Hashtags are case-insensitive everywhere, so #SourDough and #sourdough are one tag. In a saved block they look like two different lines, which is exactly why this survives for years — and on a capped platform it wastes a slot you paid for.

Tags nobody reads. A forty-character run-on tag is legal and unsearchable. If it needs a second look to parse, it is decoration.

Tags that are too big to work. Nothing is wrong with the enormous general tags. A post from a small account is simply off their recent feed within seconds. That is not a restriction, and it is not a distribution channel either.

Engagement bait. The follow-for-follow family breaks the written rules on inauthentic engagement on every network that has such a rule, and draws exactly the audience that never converts. More in follow-for-follow hashtags.

A hashtag block written for Instagram is wrong almost everywhere else, and this is the mistake that scales.

The sensible counts per platform — which are much lower than the caps — are in how many hashtags. The wider crosspost problem, including media counts, is in posting the same caption on every platform.

CamelCase is an accessibility decision rather than a style one. A screen reader reads #sourdoughstarter as one run-on string and #SourdoughStarter as words. It changes nothing about which feed the tag reaches, because case is ignored for matching, and it changes everything for a reader using assistive technology.

The validator will recase a set for you, and it only touches tags that are entirely one case — somebody who wrote #SourDoughStarter has already made the decision.
