Emoji Not Showing? Boxes, Tofu and Two-Letter Flags
An emoji is an instruction to draw a picture, and the receiving device decides. Here are the four ways that goes wrong, and which of your emoji are at risk.
An emoji not showing correctly is almost never a bug in the app you posted from. An emoji is not a picture you embed — it is an instruction to draw one, and the receiving device decides what to draw, or whether it can draw it at all.
Four things go wrong, in rising order of how often.
Flags: Windows draws the letters
This is the one that surprises people most, and it is deliberate rather than broken.
A country flag is not one character. It is a pair of "regional indicator" letters — two characters that a device is supposed to combine into a flag. Microsoft chose not to ship flag glyphs in Windows, so Windows draws the two letters instead. Your Japan flag arrives as the text
JP. Great Britain arrives as GB.The England, Scotland and Wales flags are worse. They use tag sequences, the least supported emoji construction there is, and a great many devices draw nothing at all or a plain black flag.
Joined sequences: one picture becomes four
A four-person family emoji is four separate emoji glued together with invisible zero-width joiners. Same for most profession emoji, most couple emoji, and the ones with skin-tone modifiers layered on top.
Where a device does not have that exact combination, it falls back to drawing the parts side by side. One picture becomes four visible characters — which also pushes the rest of your line further along, and right at a caption fold that is enough to cut a sentence in the wrong place.

Text presentation: the same emoji in black and white
Some symbols predate colour emoji and default to the old monochrome glyph. A heart, a peace sign, a checkmark, an aeroplane: typed as the bare symbol they may draw as flat black line art, and only with a variation selector attached do they ask for the colour version.
The two strings look almost identical in your composer and completely different in a feed. This is the failure people never diagnose, because the emoji is showing — it is just wearing the wrong clothes.
The fix is to pick the emoji from a picker rather than typing the symbol, which gets you the selector for free.

An emoji added in a recent Unicode release is a hollow rectangle — "tofu" — on a device that has not had an operating-system update since it landed. Older Android builds and locked-down work phones are the usual offenders, and plenty of them are never updated at all.
There is no fix other than choosing an older emoji. If a recent one is doing decorative work, that is fine. If it is carrying meaning, it is not.

Why is my emoji not showing on Windows?
If it is a flag, because Windows ships no flag glyphs and draws the two regional indicator letters instead. If it is a box, the device does not have that emoji at all.
Why does my flag emoji show as two letters?
A flag is a pair of regional indicator letters that a device combines into an image. Windows does not do that combination, so it renders the letters.
What is the empty box some emoji show as?
Called tofu. It means the device has no glyph for that character, usually because the emoji is newer than the operating system.
Why did my family emoji turn into four people?
It is four emoji joined by invisible characters. A device without that exact combination draws the four parts instead of the combined picture.
