What Counts as a Good Instagram Engagement Rate
A good Instagram engagement rate depends on your follower count more than anything else. Here are the bands, the formula to use, and how to compare honestly.
A good Instagram engagement rate is roughly 1-3% for most accounts calculated against followers, and higher for smaller ones. The single most important thing to know before comparing yourself to any published figure is which formula it used — reach-based figures are several times larger than follower-based ones for the same post.

Calculated as (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100. These are directional bands drawn from what accounts commonly report, not published figures — Instagram does not release benchmark data, and every agency study sampling it produces slightly different numbers from a different sample.

Why smaller accounts always score higher
Not because they are better. Three structural reasons:
- A small following is self-selected. People who found you deliberately engage
more than people who followed a viral video once.
- Reach is proportionally higher. A new account's posts are shown to a larger
share of its followers than a large account's are.
- The denominator grows faster than attention. Followers accumulate; the number of
people actively watching does not grow at the same rate.
The practical consequence: compare yourself to accounts of your own size, and treat a falling engagement rate during a period of follower growth as normal rather than as a problem.
Which formula Instagram's own numbers support
If you have access to Insights, engagement by reach is the honest measure of whether a post worked — it tells you what share of the people who actually saw it responded. Engagement by followers is the right number to quote externally, because a brand can verify it without your analytics.

What moves the number
Format. Carousels and Reels typically out-engage single images, partly because they have more surfaces to interact with and partly because they are distributed more widely — see Instagram carousel size.
Saves and shares. Weighted heavily by Instagram and usually excluded from externally calculated engagement rates, which means your internal number and a brand's estimate of it can differ substantially.
Caption quality. Comments are the expensive interaction, and they mostly come from captions that ask something answerable — Instagram caption length.
Consistency. An account posting weekly has a warmer audience than one posting in bursts.
How to compare yourself to a competitor honestly
You cannot see anyone else's reach, so any comparison with another account has to use the follower-based formula on visible interactions only - likes and comments. That is fine, as long as you apply the same restriction to yourself.
The method that produces a fair number:
- Take their last twelve posts, excluding anything obviously exceptional.
- Add likes and comments for each, divide by their follower count, times 100.
- Take the median, not the mean.
- Do exactly the same to your own account, ignoring your saves and reach data.
The result is comparable. The temptation to skip step four - to compare your reach-based internal figure against their follower-based external one - is where most competitive analysis goes wrong, and it always flatters you.
When a low engagement rate means something is wrong
A number well below the band for your size, with no other explanation, usually points at one of:
- Purchased or incentivised followers — the denominator is inflated with accounts
that will never engage.
- A giveaway audience — people who followed for a prize and stayed inert. If you

- A shift in subject that lost the original audience without gaining a new one.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Around 1-3% against followers for mid-size accounts, and 3-6% or more for accounts under 5,000 followers.
Why is my engagement rate dropping as I gain followers?
Because followers grow faster than active attention. A gently falling rate during growth is normal, not a warning.
Should I include saves and shares?
Include them for your own analysis and say so. Exclude them when quoting a figure externally, because a brand cannot see them.
Is 1% a bad engagement rate on Instagram?
For an account over 100,000 followers, no - it is normal. For an account under 5,000, it suggests an audience that is not really yours.
