Engagement by Reach vs Followers: Why Yours Moved
Engagement rate by reach and by followers measure different things and can differ by several times. Here is which to use, when, and how to label it.

Engagement rate by reach, and by followers
| By reach | By followers | |
|---|---|---|
| Formula | interactions ÷ accounts reached × 100 | interactions ÷ followers × 100 |
| Question | Did this post work? | How responsive is my audience? |
| Needs | Your own analytics | Nothing — anyone can calculate it |
| Typical size | Higher, often 2-5× | Lower |
| Best for | Judging a post | Quoting to a brand |
Why they diverge
- A smaller denominator raises the reach-based number. If 20% of your followers see
- Non-follower reach lowers it, because those viewers are less likely to interact
Which one to use
Comparing yourself to anyone else
- Take their last twelve posts, excluding anything obviously exceptional.
- Likes plus comments, divided by follower count, times 100.
- Take the median.
- Do exactly the same to yourself, ignoring your saves and reach data.
Why your own number moved
- Follower growth. The denominator grew; attention did not. Normal.
- A viral post. Reach spiked, interactions did not keep pace, reach-based rate fell.
- Format change. A shift from carousels to single images changes both numbers.
- You switched formulas without noticing — the most common cause of a dramatic
