Instagram Caption Length and Where the Fold Lands
Instagram allows 2,200 characters in a caption and shows about 125 before the fold. Everything that matters has to be in that first line and a half.

Instagram caption length, in numbers
| Thing | Value |
|---|---|
| Maximum caption | 2,200 characters |
| Shown before "more" | ~125 characters, roughly a line and a half |
| Hashtags allowed | 30, and they count toward the 2,200 |
| Bio, separately | 150 characters |
Writing for the fold
- A claim. "This costs £4 and replaces a £60 gadget."
- A question with a real answer. Not "thoughts?" — something answerable.
- The first half of a sentence that needs finishing. Used sparingly, before it
Long captions are not wrong
- Break them into short paragraphs. A wall of text on a phone is skipped regardless
- Put the payoff before the sign-off. Most people stop before the end.
Hashtags and the fold
What the caption is actually for
The same problem elsewhere
- The Twitter character limit — a hard cap rather than
- Where LinkedIn puts See more — a fold after a few lines.
- TikTok caption length — where the caption also covers
