What Counts as a Good TikTok Engagement Rate
TikTok engagement rates look higher than every other platform because they are usually calculated against views. Here is what the numbers mean.
A good TikTok engagement rate is roughly 4-8% calculated against followers, which is much higher than the equivalent Instagram figure — and that difference is mostly structural rather than a sign that TikTok audiences are more enthusiastic.

Calculated as (likes + comments + shares) ÷ followers × 100. As with every platform, these are directional bands rather than published figures — TikTok does not release benchmark data, and every study measuring it uses a different sample.

Three reasons, and none of them is that TikTok users care more:
- Distribution is not follower-bound. A TikTok is shown to people who do not
follow you, so interactions can exceed what your follower count would predict. On a follower-based formula that inflates the ratio.
- Shares are visible and countable. On most platforms shares are private to the
account owner, so external calculations exclude them. On TikTok they are on the video.
- The interaction is cheap. A double-tap during a full-screen video costs nothing.
The consequence is that a TikTok engagement rate and an Instagram engagement rate are not comparable numbers, even when both are calculated the same way. Anyone presenting them side by side in a media kit should label them clearly.
The formula that describes reality on TikTok
Engagement by views — (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100 — is the honest measure on a platform where views are public and reach is not follower-bound. It produces a much smaller number, typically low single digits, and it answers the question that matters: of the people who saw this, how many did something.
Use views-based internally to judge videos against each other. Use followers-based externally, because that is what a brand will calculate. Say which you used, every time. The reasoning is in engagement rate by reach vs by followers and the formulas in engagement rate.
What actually moves it
Completion rate, which is not engagement but drives it — a video people finish gets shown to more people, and more people means more interactions.
Comment bait that is not bait. A genuine question in the caption or the last frame earns comments; "comment below!" does not.
Shares. The most valuable interaction on the platform, because a share is a person spending their own reputation on your video.
Hashtags, barely. They are a topic signal that helps the first audience be well-matched, which matters — but they are not a lever you pull for engagement: TikTok hashtags.

When the number is misleading
A single viral video wrecks the average. One video with ten million views and a normal number of interactions drags a views-based rate down and a followers-based rate up. Use a median across recent videos.
A dormant follower count. Followers accumulated during a viral moment often never watch again. This lowers followers-based engagement without saying anything about current performance.
Follower count is a weak denominator here anyway, because so much reach is non-follower. That is the strongest argument for tracking views-based engagement as your own internal number.
