How to Write Headlines That Are Not a Guess
A headline has four jobs and most only do one. Here is a method, the patterns that work, and how to test a line before publishing it.

How to write headlines: the method
Patterns that keep working
| Pattern | Example shape |
|---|---|
| How to X without Y | How to compress an image without visible damage |
| The N things that X | The five settings that suppress a video |
| X, and why Y | Shorts monetization, and why the RPM is lower |
| What X actually does | What YouTube tags actually do |
| X: the arithmetic | How much YouTubers make: the arithmetic |
What to avoid
- Curiosity with no substance. "You won't believe what happened next" is a promise
- Cleverness that obscures. A pun that hides the subject costs you every reader who
- The category as a headline. "Instagram Tips" is a folder name.
- Front-loading your brand. The first words are the most valuable ones.
Where the truncation falls
- YouTube title length — about 70 characters in search,
- Where LinkedIn puts See more — two or three lines.
- Instagram caption length — about 125 characters.
- A search result — roughly 580 pixels, which is not a character count.

Email Subject Line Length: Where Each Inbox Cuts It
Gmail on a desktop gives a subject line about 340 pixels — the tightest surface in email. A phone gives more. The count that matters is a width, not a character total.
