Free YouTube Keyword Research Using Autocomplete
YouTube's own autocomplete is real demand data, free to read and impossible to fake. Here is how to turn one seed word into a video plan.
The cheapest YouTube keyword research is also the most trustworthy: YouTube's own search box completes what people are typing, and those completions come from real searches rather than a third party's estimate. No subscription, no invented volume figures, and it works on a channel with four subscribers.
Why autocomplete beats a volume number
A paid tool gives you "1,900 searches a month". That figure is modelled — it is somebody's estimate of a number YouTube has never published. Autocomplete gives you something smaller and more useful: proof that a phrase is typed often enough for YouTube to suggest it, in YouTube's own words, in the exact order people type them.
For a small channel, that is the better input anyway. You are not choosing between a 1,900-a-month term and a 2,100-a-month term. You are choosing between a phrase people actually use and a phrase you invented at your desk.

The YouTube keyword research method, in four passes
1. Seed
Start with the plain phrase for your subject — the words a stranger would use, not your niche's jargon. "Sourdough starter", not "levain maintenance".
2. Expand
Run the seed, then run it again with each letter of the alphabet appended:
sourdough starter a, sourdough starter b, and so on. Each pass returns a different slice of the suggestion tree. Twenty-six quick runs is a surprisingly complete map of what people ask about a subject.Also try these prefixes, which surface intent rather than topic:

3. Sort by what you can win
You now have a hundred phrases. Most of them are not for you yet. Sort them by specificity: a four-word question is a video a small channel can rank for, and a two-word category is one it cannot. The two-word terms are what you eventually win by having covered the four-word ones.
4. Check the shape of the results
Search the phrase on YouTube and read the first screen. Two things tell you whether to make the video:
- Are the top results actually answering it? If they are tangential, the query is
underserved and that is an opening.
- How old and how large? A page of results from million-subscriber channels is a
hard fight. A page with mid-size channels and a mediocre thumbnail is an invitation.
Turning phrases into titles
A researched phrase is not a title. It is the thing your title has to contain, near the front, in language a human would use. Check what survives truncation before you commit:

Vocabulary research: what competitors think their video is about
Autocomplete tells you what viewers type. Tags tell you what other creators think they made. Both are useful and they are not the same thing.

The same tree gives you a series rather than a single video, which is the real point. One seed, properly expanded, is a month of uploads that reinforce each other.
What to do with the leftovers
Phrases you cannot win yet are not waste. They are the pillar you build toward: cover fifteen specific questions on a subject and the general term becomes reachable, because you now have the one thing a new channel cannot buy — evidence that you cover the subject. Is YouTube keyword research possible without a paid tool?
Yes. Autocomplete is the primary source and it is free. Paid tools mainly add modelled volume estimates, which are useful at scale and unnecessary when you are choosing between specific questions.
How many keywords should one video target?
One primary phrase, plus whatever related phrasings appear naturally. A video built to serve three unrelated queries usually serves none of them well.
Do YouTube tags help with keyword targeting?
Barely. YouTube states they play a minimal role except for commonly misspelled terms. Put the work into the title, the first lines of the description, and what you actually say in the first thirty seconds.
