The four things that go wrong
- Flags. Windows ships no flag emoji. 🇯🇵 is a pair of regional-indicator letters, and Windows draws the letters.
- Joined sequences. 👨👩👧👦 is four emoji glued with invisible joiners. A device without that exact combination draws four people.
- Text presentation. ❤ and ❤️ are different strings; without the variation selector several platforms draw the old monochrome glyph.
- Age. A recently added emoji is an empty box on a phone that has not had an OS update.

Why do flag emoji not show on Windows?
Microsoft chose not to ship flag glyphs. The characters are a pair of regional-indicator letters, so Windows draws them as those letters — JP, US, GB. It is deliberate, not a missing font.
What is a ZWJ sequence?
Several emoji joined by invisible zero-width joiners so they render as one picture. Where a device does not have that exact combination, it draws the parts side by side instead — which is more characters on screen and reads as a mistake.
Why does my heart show in black and white?
It is missing the variation selector U+FE0F. Some symbols default to a monochrome text glyph, and only the selector asks for the colour version. Picking the emoji from a picker rather than typing the symbol fixes it.
Can you tell me exactly how it looks on an iPhone?
No, and nor can any other tool — that depends on the font that specific device has. This tells you which emoji are at risk and why, which is the part you can act on.
