The First Line of a Caption Is the Whole Caption
Everything after the fold is read by people who already decided to read. The first line is the only part that talks to everyone else, and it is usually the part written last.
The caption first line is the only part of a caption that is read by everybody. Everything after the fold is read by people who have already decided to keep going, which means the rest of the caption is talking to an audience the first line selected. On Instagram you have about 125 characters to do that; on TikTok about 90.
Where the fold falls
Each network cuts the caption in a different place, and none of them tells you where. The limits themselves are published — Instagram's own caption guidance covers the 2,200-character ceiling — but the fold is not documented anywhere by anybody.

These are approximations of a rendered width rather than character rules, so a line of capitals is cut earlier and a line of narrow lower-case letters survives longer. The per-network limits — as opposed to the folds — are collected in Instagram caption length and TikTok caption length.
The important thing about the fold is that it is a harder constraint than the limit. A caption that runs past the limit is truncated at the end and loses its last sentence. A caption whose point falls past the fold loses the reader, and there is nothing in the post to show that it happened.
The most common mistake is structural, not stylistic
Most weak first lines are not badly written. They are context.
The instinct when writing is to set up before you deliver — the background, the framing, the "so I have been thinking about". That is a reasonable way to write a paragraph and a bad way to write something that gets cut at 90 characters, because the setup fits inside the fold and the payoff does not.
The result is a caption that reads plainly and helpfully from sentence three onward, where nobody is. The check that catches this is not a style check; it is comparing the reading level of the visible slice against the caption as a whole.

What the first line has to do
One thing. Not four.
It has to give somebody a reason to keep reading, and the reasons that work are small and specific:
- A concrete claim. "I fed my starter at the wrong time for three months."
- A number. Numbers survive truncation better than adjectives because they are short.
- A question you actually answer. Not a rhetorical one.
- The result, before the method. The single most reliable edit available.
What does not work, reliably: an ambiguous tease, a greeting, a restatement of the caption's subject, and anything that only makes sense once you have seen the image.
Four edits, in order of what they are worth
- Move the last sentence to the front. The payoff is at the end more often than anywhere else,
because that is how people write. This one edit fixes more captions than the other three combined.
- Cut the first sentence entirely. It is usually throat-clearing. Read the caption starting
from sentence two and see whether anything is missing.
- Shorten to about 90 characters rather than to the limit of the network you are on, so the
same caption survives crossposting to the tightest one.
- Put the ask at the end, not in the opening — asking before you have said anything is the
fastest way to lose the line.

The line break trap
A first line and a first sentence are not the same thing. If you put a line break after eight words, the fold is irrelevant — the feed shows your eight words and then "more", and you have spent the whole budget.
Sometimes that is deliberate and good. How long can the first line of a caption be?
Before it is cut: about 90 characters on TikTok, 125 on Instagram, 210 on LinkedIn and 477 on Facebook. These are rendered widths rather than exact counts, so capitals are cut sooner.
What should the first line of a caption say?
One thing that gives somebody a reason to keep reading - a concrete claim, a number, or the result before the method. Not a greeting and not a tease you do not resolve.
Does the first line of a caption affect reach?
No network has said a caption affects distribution. What it affects is whether somebody who was already shown the post reads any further, which is where saves and comments come from.
Should I put a line break after the first line?
Only deliberately. A break after eight words means the feed shows eight words and then "more", which spends the whole fold budget on one short sentence.
