How Many Words Is a 60-Second Video Script?
Between 105 and 180 words, and the range is not vagueness - it is the difference between a Reels voiceover and a live presentation. Pick the pace and the number is exact.
A 60 second video script is 150 words at a normal talking-head pace. Speed it up for a Reels voiceover and it is closer to 180; slow it down for narration and it is 115. The range is not hedging — it is the actual spread between how differently people deliver, and it is wide enough to matter.
The number, per pace

The gap between the top and bottom rows is 75 words in the same minute. That is why "about 150 words a minute" is a starting point rather than an answer, and why the pace you actually speak at is worth measuring once rather than assuming.

Why the number is always optimistic
Every figure above is words divided by pace. It counts no pauses, no breaths, no beat before the punchline and no room for a shot to land.
In practice a script that times to exactly sixty seconds on paper runs over on camera, most often by five to ten per cent. Treat the number as a ceiling: write to about 135 words for a sixty-second talking-head video and you will land near sixty rather than at seventy.
The other thing it does not count is stage directions. Anything in brackets is written and never said, so it takes no time — which is why the tools here strip it before counting rather than including it and quietly inflating the estimate.
Where the hook fits in a 60 second video script
On a one-minute video the opening is not a percentage of the runtime, it is a fixed cost you cannot afford twice.
At 150 words a minute, seven seconds of "hey guys, welcome back to the channel, in today's video I'm going to be showing you" is about eighteen words — twelve per cent of everything you get to say, spent before the video starts. On short-form, those same seven seconds are also most of the window in which anyone decides to keep watching.
A rough allocation that works for a minute:
- First 3 seconds — the promise. One sentence, said in one breath.
- Next 40 seconds — the thing you promised, in two or three beats.
- Last 10 seconds — the close, and the reason to do anything next.
- Nothing — the introduction. There is no room for one and it is not missed.

What to cut when it does not fit
In this order, because the first two cost you nothing:
- The run-up. The words before the first real sentence.
- Filler and long constructions. "In order to" is "to"; "due to the fact that" is
"because". On a 200-word draft this alone often returns fifteen seconds.
- The second example. One example lands; two is where a minute-long script always goes
over.
- The qualifier — carefully. Cutting "about" from "about thirty per cent" saves one word
and turns an estimate into a claim. Not worth it.

Where the time actually goes
A total tells you the script is nineteen seconds too long. It does not tell you that the setup is taking half the video.
Splitting a one-minute script into beats sounds like overkill and is not: three beats of twenty seconds and one beat of forty are very different videos, and the second one is the common failure. Beat timings, and the tool that produces them, are in how to write a video script.
How many words is a 60 second video?
About 150 at a normal talking pace, 180 for a fast voiceover, and 115 for slower narration. Write to around 135 if you want to land at sixty seconds rather than over it.
How many words is a 30 second script?
Roughly 75 at a talking-head pace, and 90 for a fast voiceover. The same rule applies - write slightly short, because the estimate counts no pauses.
Does the estimate include stage directions?
It should not. Anything in brackets is written and never spoken, so it takes no time, and counting it inflates the estimate.
Why does my script run longer than the estimate?
Because the estimate is words divided by pace and knows nothing about pauses, breaths or retakes. Five to ten per cent over is normal.
