About this tool
X serves each uploaded photo at a named size and the timeline asks for a middling one. This finds the file and hands you the whole ladder, up to the original upload — from a post link, or from an image link you already have.

How to use it
Paste a post link — x.com or the older twitter.com, both work. If X will not answer, open the photo in a tab, copy its address, and paste that instead: the sizes come from the address itself, so that route always works.
The size ladder
X keeps one file per photo and picks a rendition with a name parameter on the URL: thumb, small, medium, large, 4096x4096 and orig. The timeline asks for a middling one, so saving the picture from the timeline saves that. orig is the file as uploaded, and nothing in the interface links to it.
Where it stops
This reads the card tags X publishes for other sites. It uses no login and touches nothing that requires being signed in — so a protected account is reported as unreachable rather than guessed at, and a video post has no still to hand back.

X answered with a sign-in page. Now what?
Open the photo in a browser where you are signed in, copy the <code>pbs.twimg.com</code> address, and paste that here. The ladder is derived from the address, so no fetch is needed and nothing can wall it.
What is the difference between large and orig?
<code>large</code> fits the photo inside 2048 pixels; <code>orig</code> is the file as uploaded, at whatever size that was. When the upload was smaller than 2048, the two are the same picture.
Can it download a video or a GIF?
No. This tool handles photos. A video post publishes a poster frame on a different host, and that host has no size ladder.
Do old twitter.com links still work?
Yes, and so does the older <code>.jpg:large</code> image URL form. Both are normalised onto the current one before anything is read.
