How Much Text Fits on an Instagram Carousel Slide
No platform limits the text on a carousel image. What limits it is whether anybody can read it at feed size, which makes the answer arithmetic rather than a rule.
There is no limit on Instagram carousel text. Instagram does not check how many words are on an image, and it never will. What limits the text is whether somebody can read it at the size the feed draws it — which makes the answer a calculation from your canvas and your font size rather than a number anybody can quote you.
Instagram carousel text: work it out rather than look it up
A slide is a known number of pixels. A typeface at a given size has a roughly known average glyph width — about half the font size for a sans-serif at mixed case. A line has a known height. So the number of characters that fit is arithmetic:
characters per line = text area width ÷ (font size × 0.5) lines = text area height ÷ (font size × 1.35)
On a 1080 × 1350 portrait slide with a comfortable margin, the text area is roughly 840 × 1050. At a 56px body size that is about 30 characters per line over 13 lines — call it 390 characters. At 96px it is 17 characters over 8 lines, or about 140.

Those are ceilings, not targets. A slide filled to its ceiling is a wall of text; most good slides use a quarter of it.

Font size is the input that decides everything
Most overflowing carousels are not too wordy. They are set too large.
That matters because it changes what the fix is. When a slide does not fit there are two options — cut words, or reduce the size — and only one of them requires rewriting anything. Working out the largest size at which every slide fits takes a second and frequently makes the problem disappear.
The floor is legibility in the feed. A carousel is first seen as a small tile, and text that is illegible there does not get the swipe that would show it at full size. On a 1080px canvas, body text much below about 40px is difficult on a phone, and a headline below 60px stops working as a headline.
The frame changes the answer
Not every carousel is a 4:5 portrait, and the usable share of the frame varies more than the pixel dimensions do.

How to split a list into slides
- One idea per slide. Not one paragraph, one idea. If a slide has two, it is two slides.
- Never split a point across slides. A bullet cut in half reads worse than a crowded slide, and
it costs a swipe to resolve something that should have been resolved in place.
- Reserve the first slide as a cover. It is the only one that appears in the grid and the only
one most people see.
- Put the ask on the last slide, on its own. It is the only slide people arrive at having read
everything.
- Count the slides. Instagram takes twenty, per its own
carousel help page; LinkedIn document posts are effectively unlimited; TikTok photo posts take thirty-five.
What the caption still has to do
A carousel with perfect slides and a weak first line does not get opened, because the caption is what appears beside the cover in the feed. The slides are behind a swipe; the first line is not. The first line of a caption covers what it needs to say.
And if the deck is ever going out in another language, budget the text with expansion in mind — re-exporting a slide because the German ran two lines long is the most annoying version of this problem. Text expansion in translation has the ranges.
How much text can you put on an Instagram carousel slide?
As much as is legible at the size you set. On a 1080 x 1350 slide at a 56px body size that is roughly 390 characters; at 96px it is about 140. Instagram itself imposes no limit.
What font size should Instagram carousel text be?
On a 1080px canvas, 48-56px is comfortable body text and 72px or more is a headline. Much below 40px is hard to read on a phone.
How many slides can an Instagram carousel have?
Twenty. TikTok photo posts take thirty-five, and LinkedIn document posts are effectively unlimited because they are PDFs.
Should I split a long point across two slides?
No. A point cut in half costs a swipe to resolve and reads worse than a slide with too much on it. Cut the words or reduce the size instead.
