How to Number a Twitter Thread: 1/12, or Not at All
Numbering tells a reader how much is left, which keeps them reading. It also costs characters on every post, and the style with the total in it cannot be written until you have finished.
To number a Twitter thread, put a counter on every post except — usually — the first, and account for the characters the counter itself spends. A post sitting at 277 characters becomes 282 once

The one to default to is slash with total. Knowing there are ten more posts is what keeps somebody reading, and it is the only style that tells them.
The one to avoid is keycap emoji. A screen reader reads it digit by digit, and it does not draw on every device — the wider version of that problem is in emoji not showing.

Leave the first post unnumbered
The opening post is the only one the timeline shows. Starting it with
1/17 spends the most valuable four characters you have on a number, and it tells a scrolling reader that there is homework attached before it tells them why they should care.Two conventions work better:

- Add 🧵 at the end of the first post. It costs two characters and says "there is more"
without saying "there are sixteen more".
Both are options in the formatter, and both are what most well-read threads actually do.
Why the counter breaks your character count
Two mechanical problems, and they are the reason this is a tool rather than a find-and-replace.
A counter spends characters. Seventeen posts times up to six characters each, on the platform with the tightest limit there is. Any post drafted near 280 is now over, and X rejects it rather than truncating.

Should you number at all?
Under about four posts, no. A short thread is obviously short, and the counter is overhead.
Over about six, yes. Past that length a reader is deciding whether to commit, and "6/14" answers the question they are actually asking. The awkward middle is four or five, where either choice is fine.
One argument against numbering deserves a mention: a numbered thread is harder to edit after publication, because deleting a post leaves a gap in the sequence. If you tend to prune threads afterwards, the bare slash style avoids the problem entirely.
The same counters work on Threads and Bluesky, where the limits are 500 and 300 characters — set the limit in the formatter to match. X publishes its own posting rules in its help centre, and the counting rules that make 280 not mean 280 are in the Twitter character limit.

Put a counter such as 7/17 at the start of each post after the first, and check that the counter has not pushed any post over the character limit.
Should I number the first post of a thread?
Usually not. The first post is the only one the timeline shows, and a counter in front of the hook spends your most valuable characters. Add a thread emoji instead.
Does numbering count toward the 280-character limit?
Yes. Up to six characters per post, which is enough to push a post drafted near the limit over it.
How do I renumber a thread after adding a post?
Paste the whole edited thread back through a formatter. Every number after the insertion point changes, which is why doing it by hand goes wrong.
