Gifted Product Disclosure: Do You Have to Say It?
Receiving something free is a material connection whether or not you were paid. Whether it also needs the ad label depends on one question: did the brand have any say?

Gifted product disclosure is not optional
- Products sent unsolicited, with no agreement at all.
- Press samples, review units and long-term loans.
- Free access to a paid service or software.
- Comped meals, tickets, travel and accommodation.
- Anything given in exchange for a chance at a prize.
Where the guidance actually splits
What to write
| Situation | Wording |
|---|---|
| Gift with any brand involvement | #ad — gifted by Acme |
| Gift with none, and you want to be safe | #ad — gifted by Acme |
| Gift with none, minimum position | "Gifted by Acme" or "Acme sent me this free" |
| Spoken, in video | "Acme sent me this for free. They have not paid me and this is my own opinion." |
#ad and stop worrying.#gifted on its own is not a good label. It is better than nothing, it is not accepted everywhere, and it does not tell a reader the post is advertising. The list of labels that fail has the rest.Placement is still the part that fails
