Overview
About this tool
Reads a finished caption and checks six things: that a disclosure exists, that the wording is one regulators treat as understood, that it clears the “see more” fold, that it is not buried in the hashtag block, that it is in the opening line, and that you are not relying on the platform’s label alone.
Instructions
How to use it
Paste the caption exactly as it will be posted — hashtags and all. The hashtag block is half of what is being checked, so a caption pasted without it will pass a test it should fail.
The six checks
- Present — is there anything here a reader would read as a disclosure?
- Unambiguous — is it one of the labels regulators treat as understood, rather than #sp or #collab?
- Above the fold — does it clear this surface’s “see more” cut?
- Outside the hashtag block — the placement the ASA has ruled against.
- In the opening line — the only placement nobody disputes.
- Not relying on the platform tag — which is an addition, not a substitute.
Questions
Frequently asked
Where exactly should the disclosure go?
The first line of the caption, before anything else. That is the one placement no regulator has ever objected to, and it fixes five of the six checks at once.
Why does it fail my #ad at the end of the hashtags?
Because a label surrounded by twenty other tags reads as decoration rather than as a disclosure, and it is almost always below the fold as well. The ASA has ruled against exactly this placement.
Does the platform’s Paid Partnership tag count?
It helps and it is not sufficient by itself. Switch it on and write the label too.
Is this legal advice?
No. It checks placement against published guidance. It cannot tell whether your post is an ad in the first place, and it is no substitute for a lawyer on a deal that matters.
