LinkedIn Hashtags: Three, and Why More Hurts
LinkedIn has no documented hashtag limit, but three is where the convention settled. Here is why more looks amateur and what they actually do.
Use about three LinkedIn hashtags, at the end of the post. LinkedIn publishes no hard limit, but three is where professional convention settled — and on a network where posts are judged partly on whether they look considered, a wall of tags is a signal in itself.

There is no penalty documented for using more. The cost is reputational, and on LinkedIn that is the cost that matters — the audience is professional peers, and the post is partly a judgement about you.

They categorise the post and make it findable by people following that topic. LinkedIn lets members follow hashtags, so a well-chosen tag can put a post in front of people who are not connected to you — which is genuinely the main mechanism by which a LinkedIn post travels beyond your own network.
What they do not do is boost reach in proportion to their number. Three relevant tags put you in three topic feeds; twenty irrelevant tags put you in none that matter.
Choosing three
- One broad industry tag. The field you are in.
- One specific topic tag. What this post is actually about.
- One community or format tag, if a genuine one exists in your field.
Prefer tags people actually follow over ones you invent. A tag with no followers is a label, not a distribution channel — and unlike Instagram, LinkedIn shows you the follower count of a hashtag when you type it, which is unusually helpful.
Where they go, and why the fold matters
At the end of the post. LinkedIn truncates the text behind a "see more" link after a few lines, and hashtags placed early consume the space that decides whether anyone expands it.

The feature most people ignore: you can follow a hashtag yourself, and doing so changes what LinkedIn shows you. For anyone using the platform to find work, clients or peers rather than to broadcast, that is more valuable than any tagging strategy.
Follow the three or four tags your field actually uses, and the feed becomes a stream of what people in that field are discussing rather than whatever your first-degree connections happened to like. It also tells you, for free, which tags are alive - a tag whose feed is full of recruiters and automated posts is a tag not worth putting on your own writing.
That is the honest test for any tag you are considering: open its feed and read the last twenty posts. If they are good, the tag is a real community. If they are spam, adding it puts your post in a spam feed.
What matters more than the tags
On LinkedIn, engagement in the first hour drives distribution more than any topical signal. Two practical consequences:
