How to Download Facebook Photos and Page Pictures

There are two ways to download Facebook photos, and which one you need depends on what you pasted. A post link gives you the picture that post publishes to link cards. A Page link goes somewhere better: Facebook's own public endpoint for a Page's profile picture, which will hand over the copy it stores rather than a small rendition of it.

A public post publishes <meta> tags so other sites can render a link card for it, and one of those names an image. It is larger than the copy in the feed, because a link card is larger than a feed thumbnail.

fb.watch and /share/ links are fine to paste — they are followed to wherever they land before anything is read.

The catch is that a post publishes one picture to its card no matter how many it contains. A twelve-photo album comes back as one image, and the fix is to open the individual photo and paste that link instead.

This is the part worth knowing about, because nothing in the Facebook interface offers it. Facebook's Graph API serves any Page's profile picture without a token, at a size you ask for, and it answers with the dimensions it actually has.

That last detail is what makes the result trustworthy rather than a guess. Ask for the named sizes and you get small renditions. Ask for a size larger than any profile picture is stored at and Facebook answers with the largest copy it holds — and tells you how large that is.

For anyone building a comparison deck, a partner logo sheet or a competitive teardown, this is the difference between a crisp logo and one that was 200 pixels wide and has been scaled up.

Facebook answers signed-out requests with a sign-in page more readily than any other platform here, including for posts that are genuinely public when you are logged in.

"Facebook declined" and "the post has no image" are different problems with different answers, so it is worth knowing which one you have hit. The test is the same as always: open the post in a private browser window. If it renders there, a tool can read it.

Every image address Facebook serves — from either route — is signed and carries an expiry, usually measured in days rather than weeks. Paste one into a shared doc and it renders today and breaks later.

A post's photo belongs to whoever posted it, and the usual rules apply: reference, research and commentary are ordinary use, republishing is not.

A Page's profile picture is a different question, because it is almost always a logo and a logo is almost always a trademark. Using one in a comparison, a slide or a mock-up is ordinary; putting it on something that implies the brand endorsed you is not, and that line is about how the picture is used rather than how it was obtained.
