Checks a handle against YouTube’s own rules and then against YouTube itself, which answers 404 when nobody holds it. When it is taken, a short list of variants is checked too.

Type the handle with or without the @. The rules are checked first, because a handle YouTube would reject outright is not worth a request — then the handle itself is looked up.
Why this one gives a real answer
Instagram, TikTok and X answer automated profile requests with a login wall, which is why our general username checker can only link to those. YouTube serves /@handle to anyone: 200 if somebody has it, 404 if nobody does. That makes a definite answer possible here, and this tool gives one — including a third state, “unknown”, when YouTube does not answer at all. A timeout reported as “available” is how people lose a name.

- 3 to 30 characters.
- Letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens and periods only.
- Cannot be only digits and periods — anything that reads as a phone number or URL is rejected.
- Case-insensitive, so @TheSlowLoaf and @theslowloaf are the same handle.

Where do I actually claim it?
YouTube Studio → Customisation → Basic info. You can change a handle twice every 14 days, and your old one is released for anyone to take the moment you do.
It says taken, but the channel looks abandoned.
YouTube does not release handles from inactive channels, and there is no reclaim process. Treat a taken handle as permanently taken.
Does the handle have to match my channel name?
No — they are separate fields and the channel name can be anything. Matching them is still worth doing, because the handle is what people type and what appears in your URL.
