The limits do not agree with each other
An X option is 25 characters. An Instagram story poll option is about 20 before the sticker shrinks the text below readable. LinkedIn takes four of 30, YouTube five of 65. A poll written for one network is silently unusable on the next, and you find out in the composer with the post half-written.
Three ways a poll tells you nothing
- A leading question — "surely", "obviously", "just" — returns the answer it asked for, which is worse than no poll, because you now believe it.
- Two options meaning nearly the same thing split one vote, and a third option wins on less than a third of it.
- No "other" or "not sure" option collects nothing from anyone who does not already hold one of your opinions.

How many characters is an X poll option?
Twenty-five, and the poll cannot be edited once posted. The question counts against the normal 280.
How many options can a poll have?
Four on X, LinkedIn and Facebook, five on a YouTube community poll, two on an Instagram or TikTok story poll, four on an Instagram quiz.
What makes a poll question bad?
Words that signal the answer you want, options a voter cannot tell apart, and no "other" option. Each one returns a result you cannot act on but will act on anyway.
Should a poll include an “other” option?
Once there are three or more options, usually yes. It is the votes you did not collect that make a poll misleading.
