Overview
About this tool
Reads a draft for the vocabulary that costs a new reader something — platform shorthand, business abstraction, technical terms — and separately checks every acronym for whether it is ever written out. The acronym half is a fact about the text; the jargon half is a judgement, and the audience setting is what makes it. Quoted passages are never flagged.
Instructions
How to use it
Paste the text and pick who is reading it. That setting does more work than anything else here.
Two findings, and only one of them is a fact
An acronym that is never expanded anywhere in the text is a fact about the text — the tool looks for “click-through rate (CTR)” and for “CTR (click-through rate)”, and one expansion anywhere covers every later use. Jargon is a judgement, the vocabulary is ours, and it is not exhaustive.
Jargon is not a mistake
It is precise, and precision is worth paying for when the reader shares the vocabulary. “Engagement rate” is jargon to somebody who came for a recipe and plain language in a marketing newsletter. The tool reports the cost and leaves the decision alone.
Questions
Frequently asked
When should I expand an acronym?
The first time it appears, once, and never again. It costs three words and it is the only part of this report that is not a matter of taste.
Is jargon always bad?
No. It buys precision from people who share the vocabulary and charges everybody else the cost of looking something up. Whether that trade is worth it depends entirely on who is reading, which is the setting at the top of the form.
Why does it flag words I think are normal?
Because “normal” is measured against the audience you picked. Set it to peers and most of the list disappears; that is the tool agreeing with you.
Does it find every piece of jargon?
No. The vocabulary is a list we maintain and it is not exhaustive. A term it has never heard of is not thereby plain language.
