How to Screenshot a Tweet, Honestly
A phone screenshot of a post looks poor when scaled and proves nothing about who wrote it. Here is how to share a post as an image without misleading anyone.
There are three ways to screenshot a tweet, and they differ in quality and in honesty. A phone capture is quick and low-resolution; a desktop capture is sharper; a generated card is the cleanest and is a mock-up rather than a record. Knowing which one you are looking at matters.
How to screenshot a tweet: three methods
Phone. Fast, and captures at your screen's resolution — which looks soft the moment it is scaled up or posted somewhere wider. Crop tightly; the surrounding interface adds nothing.
Desktop browser. Sharper, and you can zoom the page before capturing for a higher-resolution result. Use the browser's own screenshot tool where it has one rather than a whole-screen capture.
A generated card. Renders the text cleanly at whatever size you need.

The honesty problem
An image of a post is not evidence. Anyone can produce one that says anything, in seconds, and the fact that it looks exactly like a real screenshot is precisely the issue.
Two rules that keep you out of trouble:
Link to the original whenever it exists. The link is the evidence; the image is the illustration. This is also more useful to your reader, who can see the replies.
Never present a generated card as a capture. Using a drawn card to illustrate a design, a template or a hypothetical is fine and normal. Using one to claim somebody said something is fabrication, and it is the reason our tool refuses to draw a verification tick.
If the original has been deleted, say that it was deleted and, where possible, point to an archive. "Screenshot from a since-deleted post" is a sentence that costs nothing and protects everything.
Making it readable
A screenshot is going into a feed where images are cropped and scaled, so the same rules apply as to any other image:

- Capture at high resolution, then downscale. Never upscale.
- Watch the timeline crop. X shows a band from the middle of a tall image, so a
screenshot of a long thread is unreadable until tapped — Twitter image sizes for X.
- Add alt text. A screenshot of text is invisible to a screen reader unless you
transcribe it in the alt field. This is the most commonly skipped step and the least defensible.
Where these images end up
Screenshots of posts are used as social proof, in newsletters, in slide decks and as blog illustrations. In every one of those contexts the same two questions apply: is it readable at the size it will be seen, and is it clear whether it is a record or an illustration.
X's own guidance on embedding posts — the option that is neither a screenshot nor a mock-up, and preserves the link — is in its developer documentation. Embedding is the honest default for a website; a screenshot is for places that cannot embed.

Capture on desktop and crop to the post, or use a generator that draws the card cleanly at the size you need.
Is it legal to screenshot someone's post?
Sharing a public post as commentary is ordinary practice. Passing off a fabricated card as a real post is not, and altering someone's words is defamation risk regardless of format.
Why does my screenshot look blurry?
It was captured at phone resolution and scaled up. Capture larger and downscale instead.
Should I embed or screenshot on my own site?
Embed where you can - it preserves the link, updates if the post is edited, and makes clear that it is real.
