Overview
About this tool
Sorts the marked words into six classes, counts them, and reports whether each one lands in the opening line or after the fold. The position is the point: on every surface that truncates a caption, an opening line built entirely from function words has spent its one chance on nothing.
Instructions
How to use it
Paste a caption, a description, a script or an email. Set how much of it counts as the opening — 25 words is a forgiving version of the Instagram and TikTok folds.
Read the “Where” column first
The same word in the first sentence and in the eighth is not the same word. The first is read by everybody; the second by the people who already decided to keep reading. A draft with twenty marked words, none of them in the opening, is a draft whose opening is doing no work.
The class that is not a power word class
“Concreteness” counts numbers and named things — the opposite of a power word, and the only item in the report that is not a matter of taste. “Amazing results” and “three sales in a week” are not equally informative.
Questions
Frequently asked
Do power words actually work?
They are a convention from direct-response copywriting, not a ranking signal. What is measurable is that a truncated caption is decided on its opening line, which is why this tool reports position rather than just counting.
How many power words should a caption have?
There is no number. Past roughly a fifth of the draft they stop doing anything, because a paragraph in which everything is urgent and exclusive and secret is a paragraph about nothing.
Why is “ninety” marked?
Numbers and named things are counted under concreteness. They are the thing that stops a draft being adjectives about nothing.
What counts as the opening?
Whatever you set. Instagram cuts at roughly 125 characters and TikTok at around 90 — about 20 and 15 words respectively.
